Coombs Family Favorite Halloween Costumes.

I've been running around all day trying to scrounge up some last minute pieces for our Halloween costumes this year.

We're hosting a little shin-dig this weekend and so our costumes need to be in tip-top shape by then.😜

My kids have always had very strong opinions about what they have each wanted to be each year.

Thought I'd share some of our favorites from years past:

2016 - - Carson wanted to be Ed from Good Burger.
If you're not sure whey there are grapes in his nose - - go HERE.

London was the Eiffel Tower

Joe and I were the SNL Spartan cheerleaders last year.
I scored our costumes from Goodwill and I was a tad too excited about it.

2013: Napoleon Dynamite

2015: A Deviled Egg + a Cereal Killer

2015: This year might just be my FAVORITE.
London and Joe were
Mary Poppins and the Chimney Sweeper.

2014: A Deer in the Headlights + a Bride

2009: Also one of my very favorite years.
Grant wanted to be Michael Jackson.
We DIED!!!

2014: Carson as Elvis Presley

Can't wait to share what we've been up to for THIS year!

This Weekend + A WINNER!!!

* Most of Friday morning was spent working on Etsy orders.
Can you even believe that Christmas prep is already in FULL swing?!?

* The kids were completely bored to tears by lunch time {is it time to send them back to school yet?πŸ˜‚} and so we headed out for lunch.

We went to one of our VERY FAVORITE Chandler joints.

Their lunch specials are the bomb and their calzones are SO big that I always get to take half home for leftovers the next day.

* Much to my kids' dismay, we stopped at Goodwill afterwards.

Fun Fact: My kids don't love GW nearly as much as I do.😩
Ok....they hate it.

The Halloween masks at GW always skeeve me out.
Regardless...my kids ALWAYS put them on.
{Fingers crossed he doesn't get sick this week, now!}

* Friday night the kiddos had friends over which meant we did our usual caffeine run with everyone.

* Donuts on Saturday morning.

* Grocery shopping afterwards.

I forgot how much I LOATHE being at the grocery store on a Saturday.

Also: see that bag of frozen rolls in my cart?
They're Sister Schuberts and they're pretty much THE BEST!

* Saturday night the boys had a Halloween party to go to.
My sweet friend Dacie came by to help with Carson's BOXER ZOMBIE make-up...

* While the boys were partying it up - - we went and visited my sweet dad who was in the hospital...once again.

He gets the craziest blocked bowels and becomes horribly sick with them.  Luckily, this time he was just in for one night  and now he's back at home on the mend!!πŸ‘

* Churchey-church on Sunday followed by a 3 hour nap!
{ScoRe!}

* Sunday night we went over to our dear friends' house for dinner.
My sweet friend Chanda whipped up quite the feast for my {few days late} birthday dinner.
{Note: I like to celebrate my bday all...month...long...πŸ˜†}

Steak, homemade bread, my VERY FAVORITE mac n' cheese ever, steamed broccoli and.....

....THIS TO DIE FOR Reese's Chocolate cake!!!!

You guys!!!!
It was AH-MAZZZZING!!!

My BIRTHDAY CHALLENGE to YOU!

My 3rd Birthday Party
I still vividly remember this cake. Is that weird?

It's official.
I'm the big 3-9.

Some....would be freaking out that they only have ONE year left in their 30s......

Me? Not so much.

I felt this same way when I was 29.

I really don't mind that I turn 40 next year because I have SO much around me in life to be proud of and lots to be thankful for and I'm just #grateful to wake up everyday with my sweet family.

Which got me thinking - - -

What do I want to ACCOMPLISH this last year in my 30s?

Is there a way that I can make a difference this year?

I've thought about it a lot, really.

I love a good goal and so I'm setting one this year starting TODAY.

This goal though, isn't just a personal goal, it includes my family - - who really is my everything.

Let me back up....

Last year...our family of 5 made it a goal to work with a homeless organization here in Chandler, AZ once a week.  We chose Wednesday nights because that was the only night during the week where we didn't have something already on our calendar.

Our family grew to LOVE these sweet people.
We ate dinner with them, talked about their day with them and really formed a special frienship with some of them.

We found ourselves praying for them each night....that they'd be able to get themselves back on their feet someday.

We faithfully did this EVERY Wednesday night for one year.

Sometimes....my kids didn't want to go.
Sometimes.....Joe and I had a zillion other things that we needed to do instead.

Regardless.....we went.
Each.  Week.

And guess what?

Our lives were BLESSED beyond measure.

Sometimes, we'd leave thinking to ourselves....did we even make a difference tonight? And realistically...sometimes we may not have.  But....

Our lives were BLESSED beyond measure.

As a family....we grew.

Our love for others grew and our tolerances for people 'different' than us grew ten fold.

I will cherish that year for the rest of my life.

* * * * * * * * * * *

Now...as the new school year began this past July for our children...our schedules changed once again, as well.

Sadly, Wednesday nights were not open for us anymore and we had to say goodbye to our routine of helping the homeless each week.

My kids seem BUSIER than ever this year, as I'm sure most of you can relate.

But...I still CRAVE the family time we spent together DOING SERVICE.

Which is where my CHALLENGE to YOU...my lovely blog readers...comes in!

Will you join me in this?

Starting THIS month...my family is going to render SOME TYPE of service for others ONCE A MONTH until next October when I turn 40.

Why once a month?

Because it's a stretch for us .... but not impossible.

Why as a FAMILY?
Can't I do something by myself when my kids are at school?

Yes...of course you most certainly can.
Someday I'll blog about what I've chosen to do once a week for service while Joe is at work and my kids are at school.

BUT.....

I want THIS particular BIRTHDAY CHALLENGE of mine
TO YOU to include the WHOLE FAMILY.

For me: that's my husband plus 2 sons and 1 daughter.

If you're empty nesters? Then it might just be you and your spouse.

If you're single? - - then it might be just you and that's AOK! But some months...ask a friend to join you!
The more the merrier.

Because:

A) There are strength in numbers.

B) When you render service AS A FAMILY....your WHOLE FAMILY is blessed.  And living in today's world when there is so much craziness going on....I think ALL of our families could use the extra blessings. Right?

{Plus - - I've seen the good that comes from doing FAMILY SERVICE personally in my own life, just from last year alone.}

And lastly....

C) I believe that TEACHING our children HOW TO SERVE is one of the MOST IMPORTANT things that we can do as parents.

I vividly remember watching my parents SERVE OTHERS from the time I was just a toddler - - probably 3 years old - - in that above pic.

Because of their love of service - - I now how have a love of service.

And I really have my fingers crossed that this ripple effect will continue on down into my own childrens hearts.

For my family? We are choosing to do something DIFFERENT each month.  And we will most likely be finding these ideas of service through the Just Serve website.

If you've never checked it out - - you should.
You simply enter in your zipcode and a HUGE selection of service needs right in your very own area pop up!

Do I think that some months....this is going to be hard for us?
You bet your buns I do.
Life gets busy.

But I also think that when service is extra hard...we are extra blessed.

My mother raised us with the quote:

"Service never comes at a convenient time."

And man....is that true!

So will you join us?
In my BIRTHDAY CHALLENGE?

I sure hope so.
Service can bless the world.
And boy does our world need blessing right now.

Do me a favor.

If you and your family are willing to take on this year long challenge - - will you please post your name and where you're from in my comments section?

Also - - if you blog or use social media and would like to share your family's experiences throughout the year - - will you please use #MarciCoombs39 for me?

There is power in sharing our experiences with others.
And maybe JUST MAYBE...your experiences will ignite the light in someone else to start serving.

"Unless we lose ourselves in service to others, there is little purpose to our own lives."

It worked!

This flavor is AHHH-MAZING!

She had to hunt for it though, she said.
She finally found it at.......Wal-Mart!

This Weekend was one for the books!

Do you ever feel like life hands you lemons?
In our case, this weekend....it was Italian tomatoes.
And they were thrown in our face.

I've recently started writing in a journal again - something that I have always loved to do. Some people say - - well isn't your blog your journal? And while yes, my blog does document most of the happenings in my life - - it doesn't document some of my inner most personal feelings.

Sometimes I feel that people share TOO much online.
My journal is for ME. And my heritage.
It's for ME to divulge every last thought and feeling of mine.

So last night, after what seemed like an unbelievable day - - I wrote in my journal so that I would never forget what happened.

Here are a few short excerpts explaining our day:

Joe and I were supposed to head to Milan, Italy this morning.  We’ve been looking forward to this trip for months now.  Joe actually won the trip at work by selling a certain amount of Bertazonni products - - an Italian brand appliance. This trip was entirely paid for by Bertazonni (except for the first 2 nights which we were going to explore on our own).  We were planning to be there for a week.

We packed up our kids and arranged for them to stay with our parents.  We got Cubby all situated and planned for him to be taken care of.  We arrived at the airport at 5 am this morning, all ready to check in with our luggage packed - - only to be told that Joe’s passport expires within 3 months of us returning next week - - and as a result - - they would not let him fly or leave the country.

To say that we were crushed is an understatement.  WE WERE DEVASTATED!!! The look on Joe’s face - - I’ll never forget.  He has worked SO hard for this trip.  We’ve both been SO excited about this trip. It was almost like someone was playing a joke on us.

It must not have been meant to be.  That’s all I can think of.  I strongly believe that the Lord is in the details of our lives - - there is a reason that we were not to go on this trip.  I’m holding onto that belief right now. Because if I don’t - - I’ll probably cry myself to sleep.

The Lord apparently has different things in mind for us right now.

Who knows why we were not meant to go on this trip.  We may never know.  And as sad as I am tonight to think about it - - I am comforted in knowing that everything will work out how it should.

I am grateful to have a home to come home to.  I am grateful to be able to spend the 2nd week of fall break with my children - - who I would’ve probably missed dearly.  I am grateful to have a week with NOTHING to do so that I can recharge myself.  Recharging is exactly what I need.

There is a silver lining. The airline is allowing us to use our plane tickets to fly anywhere in the world before August of next year.  This is a HUGE relief.  We will celebrate our 15th anniversary next year SOMEWHERE WONDERFUL.  And maybe, just maybe by that time…we’ll understand why this all was meant to be.

When so much bad is happening in the world right now, I really do feel silly complaining about this minor incovenience.

Yes - - it was a trip of a lifetime that we were dearly looking forward to.  BUT...considering the events in Las Vegas last week....it really doesn't matter.  At all.

We are surrounded by loved ones. We have our health. And we know that God lives.

* * * * * * * * * * * * *
We ate lunch at Oregano's yesterday afternoon before we picked our kids back up from Joe's parents house. Oregano's is one of our favorite 'Italian' places to eat.  And boy did we eat.  I pretty much ate away all of my emotions with this pazookie.πŸ˜…

So yeah...that was our weekend in a nutshell.
Some day we'll make it to Italy.
Some day.
